About Fountain Ferry park

HISTORY

Fontaine Ferry started life as a ferryboat landing and was operated by Captain Erin Fontaine.   Over the years it became a destination location for family activities like picnics , etc.   It was located at the end of the Market STreet bus line, so it was easy to get to from anywhere in the City.   It later evolved in to an Amusement Park and entertainment facility. The park closed in 1969.

ATTRACTIONS

Fontaine Ferry was not a typical amusement park.   In addition to the normal rides like the Ferris Wheel, Turnpike, and the Tilt-A-Whirl, the park also featured one of the countries largest swimming pools, a Large Roller Rink, Gypsy Village ( an outdoor might club that featured Big Bands and other music acts, ), a Beer Garden within the park, and live pony rides.    There was plenty to do at Fountain Ferry Park !

MY EXPERIENCE

My Father, Bill Matheis, was the general manager of Fontaine Ferry Park.   My uncle, Bud Matheis worked in the Skating Rink.  We lived a block away on Shawnee Drive, so  I spent most every day of my youth within the confines of Fountain Ferry.   I swam in the ginormous pool, Skated in the Roller Rink, and rode all the rides and played all the games !   I had the most popular birthday parties as you can imagine.  I knew everybody that worked at the park and they did their best token me entertained.  I used to love the 3:00 PM Stage Show in the middle of the park.
