marina city and chicago

Location

Marina City ( now know as Marina Towers ) is located at 300 N State Street in Chicago, IL.  Located at State Street and the Chicago River, Marina City is an ideal location that is readily accessible to all areas of Chicago.  6 Busl Lines and 7 El Trains are within a short walk of the building

History

The Marina City complex was designed in 1959 by architectBertrand Goldberg and constructed between 1961 and 1968 at a cost of $36 million, financed to a large extent by Building Service Employees International Union, a union of building janitors and elevator operators, who sought to reverse the pattern of white flightfrom the city's downtown area. When finished, the two towers were both the tallest residential buildings and the tallest reinforced concrete structures in the world. The complex was built as a "city within a city", featuring numerous on-site facilities including a theater, gym, swimming pool, ice rink, bowling alley, stores, restaurants, and, of course, a marina

The Neighborhood

Marina City is located in the River North Neighborhood of Chicago.   Just across the Chicago River from "The Loop".  Lake Michigan and the Navy Pier are only a mile to the East.

River North is a  Chicago neighborhood located north of the Chicago River, south of Division Street, and west of Wabash Avenue.[1] It is adjacent to the Magnificent Mile retail and tourism corridor.

River North has become one of Chicago's top neighborhoods for nightlife especially on and around Hubbard Street. It once hosted the largest concentration of art galleries in the United Statesoutside of Manhattan. River North has experienced the development of large high-rise buildings, nightclubs and restaurants.

Along with a handful of art galleries today, the area holds many bars, dance clubs, popular restaurants and entertainment venues, and a design district with shops and showrooms selling commercial and luxury interior furnishings in the blocks north of the Merchandise Mart. Kingsbury Park is an area of newly built residential high-rises at Erie Street and the Chicago River.

Marina City ( built in the 1960s ) is an interesting building to try to furnish / decorate because there are no square corners.   The units are pie shaped and range from 10 ft wide to 22 feet at the outside glass wall.   The balcony extends the living space by an additional 9 feet.  While my unit is inly 750 SF, it seems much larger because of the complete floor to ceiling glass wall that opens th

There is a large pass-through counter top between the living room and the kitchen.

An 18 ft mirrored wall includes a complete full color graphic of the Chicago Skyline.

The views from the balconies are truly spectacular.   To the East is Lake Michigan, including the locks, and the harbor Lighthouse.

To the South is a clear view of State Street, including the Chicago Theater and the State & Lake El Train station.

Well, it wouldn't be St Patricks Day in Chicago if they didn't turn the Chicago River GREEN !    I have a Birds Eye view every year and can't believe how big of a crowd that this draws. . . .

However, IMO, the Chicago River is pretty much green every day !
